Yif Castle was built in 1524 by order of King François I. At the time, the castle served as a fortress to protect Marseille from pirate attacks. In the 17th century, it was used as a prison to house political and religious prisoners. The most famous prisoner is Edmond Dantès, the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo. The story is that Dantes is wrongfully imprisoned, but escapes and takes revenge.
