Museum history and main exhibitions
The Officio delle Pietre Dure Museum was founded in 1588 by Francesco I, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He founded various workshops to foster Florence's art industry, one of which was the Officio delle Pietre Dure. This workshop produced a variety of works, including tables, cabinets, and sculptures, and was especially famous for works made of semi-precious stone and marble pieces.
The museum displays these works, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the extraordinary skill and beauty of Florentine stonemasonry. The works on display are organized by era and theme, and explanations of the production process and meaning of each work are also provided. Additionally, the museum also has a space where masonry demonstrations are held, allowing visitors to experience the art of masonry firsthand.
