history
In the late 16th century, many Jews fled to the Netherlands to escape religious persecution in Spain and Portugal. Portuguese Jews who came to Amsterdam established their first synagogue in 1639, but when they needed more space, they built the current Portuguese Synagogue in 1675.
architecture
The Portuguese synagogue is a building influenced by Renaissance and Baroque styles. The interior of the synagogue is richly decorated, especially the beautiful stained glass windows and ceiling paintings.

The Portuguese Synagogue is still used by the Jewish community and is open to tourists. Guided tours are provided inside the synagogue, and various information about Jewish history and culture can be obtained through exhibitions.
