Meiji period
Meet Hokkaido
Hokkaido Historical Village introduces the Hokkaido Pioneer Village, where you can see what Hokkaido looked like during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It is located within Nopporo Forest Park in Japan. The interior is divided into four areas: urban area, rural area, mountain village area, and fishing village area, and the scenery of the time is recreated. It's a place worth visiting at least once as it makes you feel like you're in Hokkaido more than 100 years ago.
Places to visit outside Sapporo,
Hokkaido Pioneer Village
This place was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido's development, and is a place that has restored the appearance of Hokkaido during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Inside, it is a village, and there are various museums, which are nice to see. You can ride a carriage railway in the summer and a horse sleigh in the winter. You can also enjoy making traditional amusement rides and taking straw craft classes to experience the culture of the pioneer days.
In particular, the 'Winter Life Experience' event, which is held only in winter, is a great opportunity to learn about the difficult life in winter during the pioneering era.
Bigger than you think!
The pioneer village is bigger than you think, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Inside, a real town itself has been recreated, including past houses, a newspaper office, an industrial bureau, and a hospital, so you can experience Edo period Japan in a very realistic way.
