Amsterdam's canal district
A unique museum
Let me introduce you to the Amsterdam Attic Church Museum, which was once a secret Catholic church and is now used as a unique museum. It started when Jan Hartmann, a wealthy Catholic merchant in the 17th century, renovated the attic of his house and established a secret church. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary house, but on the inside, it has the characteristics of a hidden church.
Hidden space,
Amsterdam Attic Church
Visit the attic church, a unique historical site located in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is a place that shows religious events and social history of the Netherlands in the 17th century. It was a place for Catholics who were officially deprived of religious freedom due to the Dutch Reformation in the 16th century. It is said that a chapel was built in the attic of a wealthy merchant and worship was actually held there until the mid-19th century.
As you can see in the photo, the house in the canal district looks ordinary from the outside, but once you step inside, you will find a cozy church space!
Introduction to the internal attractions
The museum looks like a typical 17th-century Amsterdam canal house from the outside, but inside is a hidden church. It is a small chapel, built to seat up to 150 people. The central altar is beautifully decorated in Baroque style, and you can admire statues of the Virgin Mary and saints. In addition to the attic, you can also see a small room used by the priests and a preparation room for the service.
The ticket also includes an audio guide for a more enriching viewing experience.
