Especially in winter, onsen travel becomes incredibly popular, and just a short drive from Fukuoka will lead you to renowned ryokan areas like Yufuin and Karatsu. This magazine feature will introduce you to some of the most captivating ryokans near Fukuoka.
01. Yoyokaku
Located in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, Yoyokaku's biggest draw is undoubtedly its rich 120-year history as a traditional ryokan. Designated as one of Japan's 12 Important Cultural Property Ryokans, it's a famous destination frequented not only by Japanese guests but also by international celebrities. The ryokan is particularly well-known for its stunning gardens. While it offers large public baths, some rooms also feature private hinoki (Japanese cypress) baths.
02. Shioyu Naginoto
Also situated in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, Shioyu Naginoto offers a personalized touch right from check-in, where guests can choose their preferred yukata (casual summer kimono) for after their bath. Located directly on the coast, this ryokan features onsen baths using seawater. Furthermore, most rooms boast ocean views, and guests can also enjoy the ocean breeze from the open-air rotenburo (outdoor bath).
03. Baien
Yufuin is a quiet, rural town famous for its onsen. Located here, Baien Ryokan is beloved by both Japanese and international visitors, especially those from Korea. This ryokan is renowned for its onsen baths, with rooms categorized into those with private rotenburo or semi-rotenburo and those without. In addition to the large public baths, Baien also offers private family baths, allowing groups to enjoy a more intimate bathing experience.
