Japan, a country that once you fall for its charm, there's no going back. Especially Osaka, with its easy access to nearby Kyoto and Kobe, is a destination you'll want to visit again and again. Short flights and affordable airfare make Osaka an easy and appealing travel choice.
While café hopping is a popular trend among travelers in Japan these days, how about trying something a little different: a bookstore tour to nourish your mind? Here are some of Osaka's must-visit bookstores, curated with a personal touch.
01. Tsutaya Bookstore (Dotonbori)
If you're visiting Osaka, you'll likely find yourself in Dotonbori or Shinsaibashi at some point. And there, often connected to a Starbucks, you'll find a Tsutaya Bookstore. While Tsutaya stores are common throughout Osaka, this location is probably the most frequently encountered by tourists.
Tsutaya bookstores emphasize "comfort" as a core value. But what sets them apart is their unique book categorization. Unlike typical bookstores that organize books by genre (fiction, essays, travel, self-help, etc.), Tsutaya curates its displays based on themes that appear within the books themselves, regardless of genre. This results in displays you won't find anywhere else. With its focus on comfort and innovative curation, Tsutaya offers a truly unique bookstore experience.
Address: 1 Chome-8-19 Dotonbori, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0071, Japan
Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 AM
02. Hirakata Tsutaya Bookstore
Just as different branches of the same bookstore chain can have distinct atmospheres and designs, each Tsutaya bookstore has its own unique vibe. This Hirakata branch is where the Tsutaya story began in 1983. Located roughly midway between Osaka and Kyoto, it's easily accessible. The entire building is dedicated to Tsutaya, housing a food hall, café, restaurant, and, of course, a bookstore. And, as always, you'll find a Starbucks nestled within. The building itself feels like a work of art, and it's even more stunning at night when it's illuminated. Hirakata Tsutaya is a place you'll want to spend hours in. If you're a book lover, you might even consider booking accommodation near Hirakata and making daily visits!

03. Keibunsha Ichijoji
Chosen as one of Japan's most beautiful bookstores, Keibunsha Ichijoji is tucked away in a quiet Kyoto neighborhood. The atmosphere is relaxed and charming from the moment you start walking towards it. The nearby Akatsuki Coffee is also incredibly charming in a traditional Japanese way, setting a wonderful mood even before you reach the bookstore. While Keibunsha isn't a large bookstore, it's similar in style to the independent bookstores that are becoming increasingly popular in other parts of the world. Rather than focusing on bestsellers, Keibunsha curates its own selection of books, reflecting the store's unique atmosphere and sensibilities.
