Matsuyama, a charming city on the island of Shikoku, is steeped in history and tradition. From ancient castles and hot springs to scenic gardens and temples, Matsuyama offers a diverse range of attractions for every traveler.

Matsuyama Castle

Perched atop Mount Katsuyama, Matsuyama Castle is one of only 12 castles in Japan with a main keep dating back to the Edo period. The castle offers stunning views of the city and surrounding landscape. Explore the castle grounds and immerse yourself in the history and architecture of this iconic landmark.

How to get to Matsuyama Castle:

  • 40 minutes by limousine bus from Matsuyama Airport
  • 15 minutes by tram from JR Matsuyama Station (get off at Okaido Station)
  • 3 minutes by ropeway or chairlift from Okaido Station

Dogo Onsen

Dogo Onsen is one of Japan's oldest hot springs, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. The main building, a three-story wooden structure built in 1894, is a designated National Important Cultural Property and is said to have inspired the bathhouse in the animated film "Spirited Away." Immerse yourself in the healing waters and experience a traditional Japanese onsen.

Dogo Onsen Visitor Information:

  • Location: 5-6, Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan
  • Operating Hours: 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM (bathing until 10:00 PM)
  • Admission Fees: Various bathing courses are available, with prices starting from 400 yen.
  • Other: In addition to the main building, there are several other onsen facilities and ryokan in the surrounding area.

Bansuiso

Bansuiso is a French Renaissance-style villa built in 1922 as a retreat for Count Hisamatsu Sadakoto, a descendant of the former Matsuyama feudal lord. This elegant villa is now a National Important Cultural Property and offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the aristocracy during the Taisho era.

Ishiteji Temple

Ishiteji Temple is the 51st temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a popular Buddhist pilgrimage route. This serene temple is a great place to experience the tranquility of Japanese Buddhism. Explore the temple grounds and admire the impressive architecture, including the Niomon gate, main hall, three-storied pagoda, and pilgrimage route.

Getting to Ishiteji Temple:

  • 15-20 minute walk from Dogo Onsen
  • Take the Iyo Railway (Botchan Train) from Dogo Onsen Station and get off at "Ishiteji-mae" Station. The temple is right in front of the station.
