A Yakushima trip to the primeval forest of Princess Mononoke

Enjoy both a small Japanese town trip and forest trekking at once

Directed by Summer

One of the special travel routes in Kagoshima is Yakushima Island.

As the first location in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Yakushima offers the chance to encounter massive cedar trees that have stood for thousands of years, as well as a lush primeval forest. Especially famous as the backdrop for the Ghibli anime "Princess Mononoke," I'm excited to introduce you to traveling in Yakushima!

How to Get to Yakushima

Yakushima is an island located a bit further south from the southernmost tip of Kyushu Island. To reach Yakushima, you'll need to take the streetcar in Kagoshima City to the Izurodori stop and then head to the ferry terminal near Kagoshima Waterfront Park.

Among the various options for sea transportation, the jetfoil ferry is highly recommended. Departing from Kagoshima's Toppy & Rocket ferry terminal, the jetfoil travels at a maximum speed of 80 km/h, getting you to Yakushima Island in about 2 hours.

What's more, the jetfoil offers shorter travel times compared to regular ferries and a comfortable ride, making the journey itself an enjoyable part of your trip. You can find more detailed information on the jetfoil, its operating schedule, and discount tickets at the link below!

Yakushima Travel Routes

The best travel route to enjoy in Yakushima, and a must-do experience, is of course trekking through the dense primeval forest! The three most representative trekking courses are as follows:

· Okono-taki Course : A trekking course that lets you experience Okono-taki Falls, one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, up close.

· Jomon Sugi Course : A challenging course, considered intermediate to advanced, and Yakushima's signature experience, where you'll encounter the Jomon Sugi cedar. It takes approximately 10 hours round trip.

· Shiratani Unsuikyo Course : A course where you can walk through the primeval forest that served as the setting for "Princess Mononoke," with courses available for various difficulty levels, from beginners to advanced hikers.

Getting to each of the trekking courses can be a bit tricky in Yakushima, where public transportation is somewhat lacking. While taxis are an option, they can be quite expensive, and renting a car might be a burden. So, the most recommended way to get around is to join a trekking tour!

The most highly recommended tour is one that explores the Shiratani Unsuikyo Course, which I mentioned earlier. This trekking tour lets you walk for about 3-4 hours through the primeval forest, covered in mossy rocks and trees, that served as the setting for the anime "Princess Mononoke," and provides the added safety of an expert guide.

A special experience of walking among trees that are over a thousand years old! Escape the bustling city and enjoy a unique Kagoshima trip by walking through a lush primeval forest where just walking can be a healing experience.
