History of Castle Voltaire

After purchasing the castle in 1759, Voltaire renovated it, created a garden, and made it his ideal residence. He wrote various works here, including novels, poetry, and papers, and had a great influence on the French Enlightenment movement. After Voltaire's death in 1778, his estate passed to his nephew, Denis Diduro. Diduro made Chateau Voltaire a center for French intellectuals, and famous figures such as Rousseau, Montesquieu, and Diderot visited here.
