History of the Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is an iconic statue located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, donated by France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American independence. Designed by sculptor Friedrich Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, it is approximately 46 meters tall, and 93 meters including the base. The statue symbolizes freedom and democracy with the signature of the Declaration of Independence in her left hand and a torch in her right hand, and is the first symbol that many immigrants see when they arrive in the United States. It is also an important historical monument designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so be sure to take a cruise to get up close.
