Gaudi's masterpiece,
Casa Mila
This house was built by Antonio Gaudi himself and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Casa Mila was designed by Gaudí in 1906 and completed in 1910 as a work of art that Gaudí devoted himself to before immersing himself in the Church of the Holy Family. It is Gaudi's most poetic and monumental work and is also called 'La Pedrera' (meaning the quarry).
Casa Mila is famous for being a building that Gaudí put all his effort into, including designing the sculptures of the masons himself. Is that why? Casa Mila is a building where the soft curves that surround the exterior extend to the interior of each floor, giving the entire building a fantastical feel as if it is rippling.
A must-see among Gaudi's works,
Casa Mila
'La Pedrera', known as 'Casa Mila' in Korea, is a house that Antonio Gaudí began building in 1905 at the request of the Mila couple, famously wealthy in Barcelona, and was completed in 5 years after many twists and turns. Gaudí was inspired by Montserrat and used only rough stones to finish the exterior to preserve its natural beauty, creating a uniqueness that never existed before.
At first, Casa Mila was evaluated as bizarre, but over time, it received great praise for approaching architecture from a sculptural perspective and creating a unique modernista architectural style that had never existed before.
Visit Casa Mila for yourself and experience Gaudí’s greatness.
Let’s introduce the building in detail.
Casa Mila is a work that reflects Gaudí's love of nature and curves. Is that why? When constructing Casa Mila, we chose a design that had no rectangular space at all and resembled flowing water. The building consists of a total of 6 floors, with 5 floors above ground and an attic at the top.
As mentioned earlier, Gaudí loved nature, so he incorporated the undulating shape of leaves and seaweed into the balcony. The building that best shows his world of work is Casa Mila.
There are still people living in the middle floor.
When you enter Casa Mila, you can take the elevator up from the first floor. However, you can view it from the 5th floor. The reason is that there are still people currently living in the middle floor.
The 5th floor exhibits the actual life Mila lived in the past. You can see how Barcelona's upper class lived in the past, from their rooms to their bathrooms.
Rooftop themed with water, fire, wind, and earth
Casa Mila’s rooftop is themed around water, fire, wind, and earth. So there are many places that are severely curved in the shape of the wind. In some ways, it can be a bit bizarre. Additionally, the shape when looking down from the rooftop has a completely curved feel, giving it a very unique feel.
If you have an audio guide, you can hear the actual sounds of water and wind when touring the rooftop, making it more enjoyable.
You can also see the interior.
There’s really nothing ordinary about Casa Mila’s interior. From the unique chairs to the hallways and even the video explaining it, everything is so unique that you don't want to miss it. The indoor residential space displays the residential appearance of the time, allowing you to see Spain at the time, which was much more developed than our country's Joseon Dynasty.
You must visit the cafe on the second floor.
There is a cafe and La Pedrera restaurant on the second floor of Casa Mila. There is a system where you order on the first floor and the coffee you ordered is brought to you when you come up to the second floor. You can have a really relaxing time sitting by the window and looking at the city of Barcelona.
Also, looking at the cafe's ceiling gives off a unique Gaudi feel, making it an even more special cafe.
